The Harding lab studies the role of metals in the biology of the parasite Toxoplasma gondii, with a focus on how the parasite acquires and uses iron. Iron is required for almost every living cell, yet can be toxic and must be carefully stored to avoid damage. We are interested in how Toxoplasma meets these challenges and what the role of iron is in these unusual, evolutionary divergent cells.
The lab started at the Wellcome Centre for Integrative Parasitology at the University of Glasgow in May 2019. The Wellcome Centre is home to a broad range of parasitology expertise; from bioinformatics and molecular biology to integrative and clinical studies, many of which take place in disease endemic regions.
